Welcome to part II of BYON: Build your Own NAS

Lets not waste time and get directly to the juicy parts on how to build your own NAS (based on XPEnology) but if i get enough requests i will be able to do a FreeNAS,  Openmediavault or any other one for you all.

 

So lets Prepare all items and things we need during the install:

 

sandisk

a USB Thumb Drive

(4GB or 8GB) this will be dedicated to the NAS and will be plugged in all the time (as it will hold the operating system and some other files)

 

 

 

all data on this thumb drive will be erased so please backup your data or purchase a new dedicated one.

 

 

some software tools that are needed and or make our life easier:

 

Advanced IP Scanner

a great tool to quickly scan your network and get an overview of all your connected devices.

 

The Synology Assistant

of course you will be able to see your device names and ip addresses as well serials (blacked our for privacy). There are more tools that we can download from that page but at this point in time we will ignore them and get back later.

Win32 Disk Imager will be used to create the bootable Thumb Drive in a short while.

 

Get the Boot File and the Pat File (the

Now we have to head over to www.xpenology.nl to download the boot image and the DSM Software

on xpenology.nl  you will always have find the latest news and updates as well files to download,  but careful the latest version of DSM, namely DSM 5.1 is currently not working with the boot image and the community is currently working on getting that resolved.

 

Lets download the files now and get it installed.

The Boot Image (64 Bit image file)

The DSM Software (64 Bit version)

DSM 5.0-4528  (that’s is the software version for the Synology DS3612xs and supports up to 12 Hard Disk’s)

DSM 5.0-4528 Update 2 * (download the update as well as we will install it immediately after the main file)

* Updates are cumulative. This Means That You can install the latest update available for your version DSM-which contains all previous updates. For this reason, only the latest available update is shown.
